WHAT IS THE HAMMAM IN MOROCCO?
What is the Moroccan Hammam? A hammam is a traditional Moroccan bathhouse. It comes from the old Amazigh archeology site of Volubilis bath traditions. For hundreds of years, Moroccan people have used the hammam for cleaning, relaxing, and socializing.
In Marrakech, going to the hammam is still a very important part of life. Men and women have separate areas, and the experience includes steam, soap, scrubbing, and washing.
Two Main Types of Hammam in Morocco:
1. Traditional Public Hammam:
Atmosphere: Local, lively, and full of people. It is where Moroccan families and friends go together.
Price: Very cheap — around 10 to 20 dirhams to enter.
What to bring: You take your own soap, towel, bucket, and glove (kessa). You wash yourself, but you can pay a little extra for a person called a tellak to scrub you.
Where: Found in the old city (Medina) or local neighborhoods.
2. Private Hammam or Spa:
Atmosphere: Quiet, clean, and relaxing. Perfect for visitors who want comfort.
Price: Much more expensive than public hammams — usually between 400 and 1000 dirhams.
What’s included: Everything is provided — towel, soap, and scrubbing. The staff does all the treatments for you.
Where: Inside hotels, riads, and wellness centers in cities like Marrakech, Fes, or Casablanca.
Difference Between Public and Private Hammam’s in Marrakech:
Public Hammam:
Atmosphere: Traditional, busy, and local. People from the neighborhood come here to wash and chat.
Price: Very cheap — around 10 to 20 dirhams.
Experience: You bring your own soap, towel, and glove (kessa). You usually wash yourself, or pay a small extra fee for someone to scrub you.
Who Goes: Mostly local people.
Why Visit: To feel the real Moroccan culture and daily life.
Private Hammam (Spa or Hotel Hammam):
Atmosphere: Peaceful, quiet, and luxurious. Designed for comfort and relaxation.
Price: Much higher, from 400 to 1000 dirhams or more, depending on the place.
Experience: Everything is provided, towels, black soap, and scrubbing glove. The staff does the full treatment for you.
Who Goes: Mostly tourists and visitors.
Why Visit: To enjoy a relaxing, spa-style experience with full service and privacy.
Both are great experiences!
The public hammam shows you real Moroccan daily life.
The private hammam is more relaxing and comfortable, like a spa.
Steps of the Moroccan Hammam Ritual:
Steam Room: You sit in a hot, steamy room to open your pores.
Black Soap: Your skin is covered with black soap (savon beldi) made from olives and olive oil. It helps clean and soften the skin.
Scrubbing: Using a kessa glove, the body is scrubbed to remove dead skin. You will feel smooth and clean.
Ghassoul Clay: Then, a natural clay mask called ghassoul may be used to purify your skin and hair.
Rinse & Relax: After washing, you relax in a cool room and drink a cup of mint tea — feeling calm, fresh, and new.
